Polio:-

Rotary is part of a global partnership that since 1988 has reduced the number of polio cases worldwide by 99 percent.

Did you know that . . .

  • Polio is a highly infectious disease that primarily affects children under the age of three and can cause paralysis within hours.

  • Before eradication efforts began in 1988, polio paralyzed more than 1,000 children a day, which totaled about 350,000 children annually. The incidence of polio has since declined by more than 99 percent.

  • Vaccinations easily can stave off polio. Vaccinations have prevented an estimated 500,000 children per year from contracting polio. A child can be protected against polio for as little as 60 cents (US) worth of vaccine.

  • Only four countries are still polio endemic — an all-time low: Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Rotary International is the spearheading member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and is the largest private sector donor. It has contributed more than US$600 partnered with their national ministries of health, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and with health providers at the grassroots level in thousands of communities.

Rotary Surat Riverside has been aggressively taking part in this global drive to eradicate Polio from the face of this world. We have been taking part in the National Immunization Days, creating awareness about Rotary’s effort for the cause and raising funds by means of cultural programs to contribute towards the PolioPlus division of The Rotary Foundation.

A polio-free world is within our grasp. Join Rotary's effort to end this crippling disease. Learn more about Rotary's ongoing effort to eradicate polio and how you can help through contributions to PolioPlus and PolioPlus Partners.

Among the various efforts put in by RSR, a few of our Polio activities have been listed below:

Polio Pulse Awareness Program:-
RSR Polio Rally 2001-02

Rotarians of Rotary Surat Riverside with families kids Rotractors wearing polio caps, aprons arm bands were on the streets at the important junctions of the city on Sunday 2nd December 2001, creating awareness on Polio Pluse vaccination eradication program in a very unique way never done before. Our President Rtn JugalKishor Shinglot along with the Polio Chairman Rtn Stanley Martin, hada brilliant idea of a human chain. 50 meters banner was painted. A very special thanks to Rtn Amit Adhiya the Muslim staff of his garment factory, who in spite of Ramzan fast, did the stitching of the banners late at night for us. About 30 plus Rotarians, annes annets Rotractors were seen walking with the banner on the streets roads of Surat city creating awareness.

PDG Rtn Prafull Bhat District Governor Elect Rtn. Kulbandhu Sharma also joined the human chain. They were very pleased with the efforts ideas of this young upcoming enthusiastic club. The human chain went around Chowk area, Athwa Gate, Surat Railway station Sumul dairy circle.

Polio Pulse Awareness Program:-

Rotary Surat Riverside was a part of the awareness drive on the 2nd National Immunisation Day 21st January 2002. A large number of Anns, Annets, Rotractors and family friends actively participated.

Our Motto: To continue our endevour to help and generate greater awareness for complete polio eradication.
RSR Polio Rally 2001-02

The highlight this time was a total of over 100 banners stitched together to probably make the longest banner displaying various Polio messages in English and Gujarati. The length of the banner, which was approximately 120 meters long and displayed through and equally long human chain, was enough to draw the attention and people looked through the entire length just wondering and wonderstruck. This in itself created awareness.

The group assembled at 10:00 a.m. on the 21st Jan 2001 at S.G.Chambers and then began our campaign.

We began with a human chain which encircled the Makkaipoolk Circle displaying our long banner and informing people about Polio eradication.

Our next stop was at Bhagal the heart of the city which was the busiest junction at the late morning time. Despite difficulties, we again managed to form our human chain along with the banner uninterrupted and went walking around the whole vegetable market area.

Our last stop was the Udhna Darwaja circle, Ring Road near Parag House wherein we parked ourselves at the central traffic islands and road dividers.

This time too the entire Polio team was as charged as ever and took up the campaigning fervently. They walked a good many miles through crowds and junctions with a smile on their faces. We did draw a large number of public attentions that looked on and read our banners too. We are confident that this joint effort of ours did send the Polio message far and wide.

Report on First NID of 2004-05:-

On a sunny Sunday morning (10th October 2004) were seen a group of nine committed Riversiders and one committed Annet - Shrena, on a mission National Immunization Day. We assembled on Ring Road and after a quick breakfast, set off to Pandesara, the area designated to our Club for the last three years.

RSR Polio Rally 2004-05

We motivated the Surat Municipal Corporation social workers at various booths en route, encouraging them to continue the good work assigned to them, which they seemed to carry out very diligently. We handed over public awareness material to promote Rotary's involvement in this noble cause.

We then proceeded to the Pandesara Health Centre and interacted with the Health workers and Medical Officers who were coordinating the immunization activities of the entire zone. We also administered Polio drops to many of the children who visited the immunization centers.

As we celebrated Rotary's most important mission to eradicate Polio, we wish that we had many other Rotarians along with us TO CELEBRATE THIS ROTARY CAUSE.

National Immunization Day 2004-05-

By the end of 2005, it was promised that POLIO shall be eradicated from our country. By and large this goal has been achieved barring some cases in the densely populated states like U.P., Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttaranchal, Delhi and Punjab.

There are several factors that come into play to ensure that defeating Polio remains a daunting task. Severe poverty, unclean water, poor sanitation conditions and high population density make fertile breeding grounds for the wild polio virus.

RSR Polio NID 2004-05

As the polio eradication campaign has been running for a long time, it has led to apathy and fatigue in the programme. Similarly only few Riversiders took their valuable time out in lending a helping hand in this Mega Campaign on 21st May 06 -the second N.I.D. of the year. The challenge is to sustain the momentum and to maintain the interest of the health workers, officials, volunteers and the public at large. Political and religious leaders are also roped in to make an appeal to the public to ensure that their children receive the polio vaccine.

However, while taking pride or having already eradicated POLIO from GUJARAT, it is equally important to sustain polio immunization activities.

We cannot afford a repeat of 2003, when polio resurfaced in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamilnadu because of slackening of efforts. A small team of Riversiders visited the Primary Health Centre run by S.M.C. in Pandesara area and conducted an awareness campaign in consultation with the doctors and staff members. Our efforts would definitely have got the desired impetus, had more members attended the meet.

NID 2007-08: a final push to eradicate Polio-
RSR Polio NID 2007-08

The team of RSR gathered at President Rtn Sanjay Pandys residence at 10 am in the morning on 6th Jan '08 to proceed to Arogya Kendra, Pandesara to participate in the Polio Program. Although the attendance was not high as the program coincided with a practice cricket match, the spirits were high as the Polio Immunization Program is one of the biggest socially beneficial projects taken up by Rotary International.

On reaching the venue, the team of RSR put up banners of Rotary Polio Program. The team distributed whistles and masks among the children who were coming to the booth for taking the polio drops. This in turn helped pull up a large crowd at the booth as word spread  among children about  the distribution of whistles and masks which also helped in making the even more meaningful.

Under the leadership of President Rtn Sanjay Pandya, the team members personally administered the polio drops to the children. The team included IYE student LEA DUCR who had the privilege of experiencing the Polio Immunization Program.

The President as well as all riversiders expressed their gratitude and thanked the team from Surat Municipal Corporation who were present at the booth for their cooperation in making the program a success.
