First Blood Donation Camp of 2003:-

The year’s first blood donation camp was organized on 17th August 2003 with the able guidance of PP Rtn. Jugal and the active and enthusiastic involvement of the Radheynagar Youth Club. An attractive Pandal with facilities for blood donors and sitting arrangements for volunteers was prepared by them.

Inspiring and stimulating music was provided in the background. The function was graced by the Municipal Counselors Shri Jitubhai Barot, Shri Hiteshbhai Gamit and Mrs. Rupaben Zaveri. Mrs. Rupaben inaugurated the camp followed by an inspiring speech by Shri Jitubhai. Dr. Gunvantbhai Desai of Surat Raktadankendra was present to guide the proceedings. Rotarians, Anns, Family Friends and students of Engineering College donated blood. In all 51 units was collected.

One incident proved that humanity was still living in our hearts – viz a passing Shikh gentleman stopped on hearing the music to see what was going on. On hearing about the blood donation camp, he immediately donated his blood too. Hats off to him. It was a wonderful way of ‘Lending a Hand’. Certificates were given to the donors.

As Rotary’s anniversary falls in February, it was decided to commemorate it with service to the mankind. The TEAM-103 of Rotary Surat Riverside, who has always been in the forefront when it comes to blood donations, took up the task and tied up with RC Udhna and RC Surat Seaface in an endeavor to collect 103 units of blood. Members were intimated by emails, text messages as well as personal calls to avail of this noble opportunity on February 23rd 2008, Saturday between 4 and 6 p.m.

PP Rtn Prakash Patel of RC Udhna came forward to lend his space at the lower ground at Platinum Plaza opp. S.P.B. College of Commerce.  He made  wonderful  arrangements  for

beds, tables, biscuits, coffee, etc. to compliment the motto of the evening “Save Life – Donate Blood”.

Sec. Amit had taken extra pains to co-ordinate with 3 local TV channels and 6 newspaper correspondents to organize a press conference in order to spread awareness of Rotary’s humanitarian programs among the local public. He tried to do justice in apprising the audience (which was aired multiple times) about the purpose of the blood camp.

The tremendous response to the camp forced it to be kept till 7:30 p.m. as people kept on registering one after the other for the cause. RSR managed to reach its target of 103 bottles of blood in spite of many of its members and anns being rejected on medical grounds.

Rotary’s 103rd anniversary and the success of the camp were celebrated by all three clubs by cutting & savoring a cake late in the evening. Three cheers for RSR!!!
