Eye Camp at Olpad:-

Just as the patience began to break on 19th January 2003, the gloomy pall on the faces withered off and transformed into brightness as they sensed arrival of the Rotary Riverside team to take care of them. They were the residents of Bhadol village at Olpad.

RSR Eye Camp Olpad

The Rotary team swung into action and 128 plus patients were taken in and scanned for possible ophthalmic corrections on the Sunday morning at Olpad by Rtn.Dr.Kuldip Desai and Ann.Dr.Niyati Desai. Rtn.Dr.Ajay Bharadwaj and PP Dr.Sunil D’souza joined in Ortho and General care respectively taking the total number of patients to more than 150. Spectacles were distributed and registrations were made for those who needed surgical corrections like removal of cataract, etc,.

At one time it seemed unending when people came in pouring in crowds. It would not have been possible in those 4 hours but for the smooth coordination and swift action of the team. IPP Jugal Shinglot and PP Sunil D’souza meanwhile gathered youth to explore a possibility of forming an RCC - one more step forward.

It was a real stretch for the Dr. Desai couple as they were kept busy continuously. A big hand to them – highly appreciable efforts. ‘Core ground work’ in President Mukund’s words. Wonderful lunch with all the true affection by senior member of the village family was the reward to the day’s efforts of the team of doctors & President Mukund Jariwala, IPP.Jugal Shinglot, Rtn.Vishal Sinha, Rtn.Siddarth Shah, Rtn.Divyang M.Parikh & Rtn.Ramesh N.Jaitane.

That was a good show. More field work and more closer we go towards achieving Rotary objective of service to mankind.

Eye Check-up Camp at Vesu Gram Panchayat School:-

Our club is blessed with a very enthusiastic Rotarian Dr.Kuldeep Desai who is an ophthalmologist and has performed more than 700 free cataract surgeries under the banner of Rotary. This young, modest and true Rotarian arrived at the place of service sharp at 9.30 am on 18th October 2008 along with 40 Rotarians and family of rotary.

We had already made the required arrangements well in advance communicating with the principal of the school Shri Ramesh Patel. Students of 5th, 6th and 7th were present on that day. Dr Desai told all the children the purpose of the hour, the importance of the test to be carried and did some counseling with them. He also advised all the students to take proper sleep, watch T.V. from a particular distance, have leafy green vegetables and fruits to maintain healthy eyes.

Dr. Desai then called up all the students and carried out the tests which included a 20 ft image count test with one eye closed at a time thoroughly making a check of left and right eye. He followed up with cornea check and normal routine checks. Students who failed the tests were personally called up by Dr Desai to his clinic and detailed tests were carried out to conclude the type and range of spectacles. The sad part of the story was total 5 students who failed the tests were girls, but the happy part was they were aided with spectacles by Rotary Surat Riverside.
On 11th November 2008 some of the students were selected randomly looking at the physical stature and blood tests were done to check up their hemoglobin readings with the aid of local pathological technicians.

Awareness about the camp was created in the community by circulating pamphlets elaborating the problems that arise out of calcium deficiency in the newspapers. Text messages were also sent to all members to urge all elderly people known to them to take benefit of this free diagnosis which costs around Rs. 1200 in private. Around 120 patients were checked from 9 am to 7 pm.
